About River Terrace

Many people may have learned at school about the ‘River Terrace in Numata’. It is considered the most beautiful river terrace in Japan because of its large scale size in both height and extent and its distinct appearance. There are several viewing spots in the city including restaurants and outdoor bath.

On the banks of Katashina River, the river terrace developed with deeply distinctive difference in levels at downstream basin before merging with Tone River. Urban district is located on the highest terrace surface, and the difference in height from Numata Station of JR Joetsu Line is more than 70 meters. This river terrace can be clearly identified from higher places like Shiisaka Pass, Mt. Amagoi and Mt. Komochi.
